"Ah, low-code. That’s just for people without coding skills to throw together a simple little app, right?"

I hear that a lot from developers who look at low-code with a bit of skepticism. But honestly? They’re missing the point.

Low-code has come a long way. In recent years, it has evolved like crazy.

These days, nearly everything you can build with high-code, you can build with low-code too. Only faster. And often better.

So set your assumptions aside for a moment.

Here’s why low-code is actually a smart choice exactly for business-critical applications:

1. They’re easy to tailor to the user

Low-code lets you build a working application in record time, and make changes just as fast. That gives you a huge advantage: you can test with real users early and often. As a result, low-code apps usually fit their needs much better than traditional high-code apps.

With high-code apps:

  • It often takes months or even years before users can give feedback on something that actually works

  • Processing that feedback takes another few months

  • And developers are too busy making the system work to focus on user experience

With low-code apps:

  • Users get a working first version in just a few weeks

  • Their feedback shows up quickly in the next version, so they can check if it’s really better

  • And developers have time to focus on what users actually need

2. They can look seriously good

A lot of people still associate low-code with apps that look basic and honestly pretty boring. That’s a shame, because that idea is long outdated.

Sure, the default building blocks and UI patterns in low-code might not win any design awards. But who says you have to stick to the defaults?

With low-code, you’re free to style your app however you want as long as it doesn’t interfere with the logic. Platforms like OutSystems and Mendix give you built-in styling tools, but you can just as easily use regular CSS. That’s how styling works in any app, high-code or low-code.

Still skeptical? Let us show you.

Stedin Piek, Interfood Connect and Grant Thornton’s customer acceptance were all built with low-code.

3. They’re built for high performance

With low-code, you build using well-tested standards and components. That helps you avoid the kind of system I see a little too often: one that no one dares to touch anymore because years of spaghetti code have piled up.

Since you’re not starting from scratch every time, there’s less room for makeshift workarounds and accidental bugs. That means fewer security issues, better stability and a smoother experience overall.

Low-code apps are often faster, safer and a lot more maintainable.

4. They're very secure

Modern low-code platforms are built with security at their core. They come with standard, built-in security features developed by cybersecurity experts. These platforms are also constantly updated, so you're always protected against the latest threats.

It’s no coincidence that low-code is regularly used by organizations where strong security is essential, like governments and financial institutions. Think Santander Bank and the municipality of The Hague.

5. They make you agile

If you spot a market opportunity but your app isn’t ready for two years, chances are you’ve missed it.

With low-code, you can have a working app in just a few weeks. That makes you more agile and boosts your competitive edge.

And if you’re already behind your competitors, low-code is the fastest way to catch up.

6. They easily connect to your existing systems

Low-code platforms come with a wide range of built-in integration options. That makes it easier to get your low-code apps working together with your existing systems. You can effortlessly exchange data and let processes flow seamlessly from one system to another.

7. They’re trusted by serious organizations

What do DAF, Grant Thornton, Stedin and Eneco have in common? They are all large, serious organizations with complex processes. But there’s another thing they share: we built successful low-code apps for all of them. Often for highly business-critical processes.

The days when low-code was only used for simple Excel sheets and forms are over. Nowadays, you can even build entire ERP systems with it. We’re doing exactly that right now.

It’s time for a new image

In recent years, low-code has grown into a serious competitor to high-code app development. In many ways, low-code is now the clear winner.

So it’s time for a fresh new image.
