Get to Know our Team: Vicky
Team Resilience keeps on growing and growing. As you might've read from the previous posts, we started with introducing our amazing team members. This time we asked Vicky, one of our amazing developers and graduate of our Outsystems Academy!
You’re a fairly new addition to the crayon box that is called Team Resilience. What colour would you be and why?
After thinking about it, I debated whether I would be the bright Team Resilience red or navy blue. Would I be the colour that would steal the show or be a classic colour that fits everywhere? Even though the navy blue is my favourite colour, I am a red crayon. There is no Team Resilience without this bright red.
What are you known for in the office? (e.g. lame jokes, always on time etc.) Please give an example as well
My hunger. I will never be late for lunch, and you can see my eyes sparkle when it is deep-fried Friday. Kipcorn anyone?
"starting an application from scratch and seeing the result is amazing"
What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?
Right now, I am in between projects and mainly writing success stories for the website. Before that, I worked on a web application for care providers. As this was my first project, it is automatically the coolest thing! But seriously, starting an application from scratch and seeing the result is amazing. I enjoyed working on the design, but also understanding the details of the integration systems and how you make API’s.
"I thought having studied communications before becoming an OutSystems developer -and therefore missing some extra coding knowledge- was going to be my biggest challenge."
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve encountered so far?
I thought having studied communications before becoming an OutSystems developer -and therefore missing some extra coding knowledge- was going to be my biggest challenge. It is easy enough to think back on these moments where I thought ‘if I had studied something IT related, I would know how to solve this’ in my first project. Interestingly, those moments were countable on one hand, and probably had changed nothing if I had more of an IT background. I am still learning the ins- and outs of the OutSystems platform, and it makes total sense that you don’t know everything yet. Still, the two months of preparation I had during the Academy were more than enough to get me up to speed and to contribute to building a portal just fine. It just took me some time to realize that!
From a communicational perspective (which I found is just as important), there is an even greater challenge that I have encountered. How can we translate the client’s wants to a solution? And even more interesting; Are those wants what he or she actually needs? Exploring it all together and come up with a solution that works on all sides, is something way more difficult than I ever thought. It is also a challenge that keeps coming back every project. I hope that my growing experience will make it easier and easier in the future to overcome this.
What are you currently watching on Netflix?
I’m re-watching ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ after I’m done with Ozark. I can always recommend Castlevania, The Witcher, and Peaky Blinders. If you are into anime like me, you need to see Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Tokyo Ghoul (or read them!), and childhood classics like Naruto and Bleach. If you think you can handle a bit more ridiculousness: Gintama is for you. I always enjoy discussing good anime or series, so please send me a message to share the good stuff.
